The History of Fathers Day
The origins of Fathers Day can be traced to the early twentieth century to compliment Mothers Day celebrations, the first known celebration of Fathers Day is recorded in 1908, in West Virginia in the USA, although it was to take many years before the celebration became official, and widespread across the world.
Infact, at first the celebration was ridicudled and derided, with much opposition suggesting that celebrations such as Grandparents Day, Secretaries Days and National tidy desk day who all swiftly follow!
Infact it was’nt until the 1930’s that in the US a National Father’s Day Committee was formed, (renamed in 1938 to National Council for the Promotion of Father’s Day), whos aim was to promote Father’s Day, legitamise the until previously unofficial celebration and to manage the celebration in a more commercialised way, to increase consumer sales and spending during the Fathers Day holiday period, so now at least we know who to blame for this commercialisation.
Fathers Day 2009 is largely celebrated on the 21st June (the third Sunday in June) although, many countries celebrate Fathers Day on a range of dates ranging from the 23rd February (Russia) to the 26th December (Bulgaria).
